These children were victims in the holocaust, some Kapos and other concentration camps leaders would treat the children with kindness by giving them warm clothing and extra food. The children in this picture are wearing warmer clothing than the adult prisoners. A lot of children were killed right away as they were considered not able to work, there for not worthy of life in the Nazi's eyes. This scene in the book that this reminds me of is when Elie arrives at Buna and the head of the camp took a special interest in the children and ordered extra food be brought to the few ten and twelve year old's in the convoy. Elie later finds out why this happens.
